View Full Version : pull behind trailer
anyone using the likes of a Harbor Freight trailer with the car top carrier for a pull behind trailer?
Wondering how well they pull and track.
They are inexpensive enough but didn't know if it was better paying another thousand dollars or so and getting a real trailer.

They pull just fine. My only concern on them was the 8" wheels at the sppeds I ride. I just made sure I had premium wheel bearings (cheap addition) and Amsoil 2000 synthetic grease. Never worried about it again. The way a trailer is loaded will affect the way it pulls a WHOLE lot more than the type/design of the trailer. Be sure it is not rear heavy when loaded. If it is, it will sway. I loaded mine the first time with the cooler over the axle, the tongue on the rest while on a bathroom scale and shot for a 20 pound tongue weight. Then after the first time, I made sure I always packed it the same every time.
Nearly 100K-no problems.

they pull just fine. have been using one for several years with no problems. I went with the 12" wheels. and made my own frame from square tubing. also I removed one leaf of the springs to soffen the ride. hardly tell it is back there.

I have a total of $246.00 in mine(including a spare). I stayed with the 8" tires. I've been pulling it for the last 2 years from Daytona to Asheville to Cheaha to Portland Maine. Speeds from 70 to 100. We average 80-85mph. (with NO PROBLEM). They are nicer($$$$) trailers out there, BUT my luggage can't tell the difference.

I built one that looks like a Stage Coach in 1986, just before I retired. I pulled it in 49 of the 50 states. I let is set after rebuilding it in 1999 for a couple of years. A friend of mine knew I had it and wanted to buy it. I really didn't want to sell it but when he asked for a $$$$ figure, I set it high enough I figured he'd say no thanks.....
Well as my daddy always said, a fool and his money soon part,.

This was a friends Trike and he borrowed the trailer for a trip.
It ran the 8" tires without a problem. I pulled this trailer behind about 6 or 7 different bikes.... It was made out of billboard plywood, Harbor Freight (cutdown) trailer chassis and 1 leaf in the axle spring. My buddy with the Trike used to follow me on trips we took together. He said the trailer wheels spent more time in the air than they did on the ground, when we were running full out.
One time the trailer got to doing the back and forth bounce after a near collision with a vehicle that turned left in front of me. I was real glad I had the solid 1 7/8" hitch, otherwise it would have been on it's side dragging. Other than that, all I did was replace wheel bearings as needed and lots of tires..Guessing, and from my daughters record keeping of mileage on our trips, the trailer had close to 100,000 miles when I sold it and the new owner has put over 70,000 on it since he bought it.... He repainted it this past winter and said all the joints were still tight and it was as solid as when he bought it. So build one and forget about the big old fancy ones. IF, I get another trailer, it will be a homemade one. Every manufactured trailer I have bought, I have either had to rebuild them after one season or fix em before I could use them, bar none.
Bushtec, I couldn't get the wobble out of it, even Preston couldn't be of assistance, he finally bought the trailer back. Bought a Hannigan, had to rewire it to get the lights to work properly. Then after getting rearended with it going to INZ3, it has been all gone through again, and it is still junk. The only good manufactured trailer was a Escapade, but that hump down the middle was a bear to load around and over........
