Hey All,
First post here..hopefully you can help me out. I currently ride an 02 Goldwing, and a 97 Yamaha Vmax. I use the Vmax mostly for commuting, and while it's a good bike, I'm looking for something that gets better mileage, and distance. I am somewhat into diesel engines, and figured, why not put a 3-4 cylinder diesel in a bike?
I've recently really liked the looks of a bagger bike...one with a small fairing on the front, and hard bags. So, I figured that would be what I intend to build if this project gets off the ground.
I figured on using a turbo'd VW diesel engine...will either be the 1.6 or 1.9L 4 cylinder. Somewhere between 75-90 hp, and a shade under 200 ft lbs of torque.
I contacted Ultima transmissions to see if they thought their tranny could hold up to the torque these motors make, and they claimed that they would. I'm guessing the final drive will be belt...not sure I want to try and match up a driveshaft, and don't want to run a chain. Some guys have run a CVT clutch, making their bikes an automatic, and I would just as soon be banging gears than have a twist and go.
So, now I am left with figuring what frame to use, and an HD crossed my mind, as I figured it might be a steel frame, but then I thought about a Valkyrie as being a possible canidate as well. I don't know if the frame is steel on this bike...haven't looked at one in over 10 years.
Do any of you think the Valk frame would be a good idea to use? It would be modified to accept the motor and tranny, and converted to belt drive.
What do you think? Any help is appreciated. :)
