How long does an alternator last? I got 75k on my Valk and my battery is new and I have lost power. Im on vacation in Siesta Key Fla and I need an Alt. Any good Honda shops in the area?

It may just need brushes. Mine went out at about 80k. Replaced the brushes and it's fine after that.

An excellent write-up is here:
http://www.valkyrieriders.com/shoptalk/ ... ervice.htm (http://www.valkyrieriders.com/shoptalk/alternator/alternatorservice.htm)

(the first step is not always doable...mine was easier to twist the alternator out and then remove the cable..

Valksmile,
Good luck on finding one on the shelf somewhere.
A 1500 wing alternator will also fit, you just have to twist the noise a 1/3 of a turn.
Mine on the wing went out at 16k, got it replaced under warranty.
Then put in a compufire. But Speedie and I measured it several times, and the compufire is not a drop in for the Valk.
Might fit if you slid the motor foward then put it in.
But still looked like the frame was in the way.
But it would give you some serious power.
Good luck on finding one, a Honda Alternator that is.

Valksmile,

Try Hap's Honda in Sarasota.

Mine didn't last very long at all, maybe 25K. I say you did good to get that much out of it. 8)

Hey ValkSmile, I live about 10 min from Siesta Key. Got Garage, Bike Lift, tools. If there's anything you need don't hesitate to call. (941) 586-7841 my cell. Hap's Honda (941) 365-3443 has been doing business in Sarasota for 55 yrs, I've been dealing with them for 15yrs. Located on north side of town, hwy 301/N.Washington Blvd then east on 17th St. I know that they will pick your bike up ifn you can't get it to them. I recommend them.

Hey Scott

Mine went out at 70... get a wing alternator and it is cheaper and all you have to do is take the screws out holding it together and reindex it 90 degrees... then you'll have the alternator for your bike... Honda is ridiculous with their prices on Valk alternators.

I don't rememberthe mileage on my 1st one. Honda replaced it under extended warranty...... That one lasted to about 95,000 and I replaced it with the Goldwing alternative.

200,000 and a set of brushes later, it is still in there a doin it thing, keepin the lights lite and the battery up.

Thanks guys, I kind of forgot that I posted this message on this board too. Got the Alt fixed, I had all the tools I needed, I replaced the brushes but that was only half the problem, the rotor had a broken wire on it. I took it to an Alt shop in St. Pete that my buddy deals with and the guy actually had a rotor from an old GoldWing Alt that he reinforced for me and put it in and I was ready to go. Vacation saved. Did about 1500 miles in 2 weeks, had a campsite right on the beach too.
