It's morning.... Got my coffee.... where ya all at...

Well we picked up an old Yamaha 650 that Hal Jones had tucked away in his well house. Jason needs some wheels. so we have to get to work this morning and get this thing running.

We got it fired up last night but it is only firing on one cylinder. We will check the carbs today and spark.....

Spring is right around the corner....

Sounds like a fun project. I have way too many projects around here right now. :( I cut a counter top 3.5" too short yesterday and I'm really bummed about that. :( I guess I need to just suck it up and get it done. I need to work on Lance's 250 so I can get that sold too. Take care Bro.

Hey Smiley, what year of a 650 did you get?

Is it the one with the compression release on one cylinder when you start it? If so the reason it is only running on 1 cylinder is that valve is stuck. Spray some WD40, or any rust inhibitor in it and let it set for a couple of days. Then try and work it lose.

YOU CAN NOT find that valve any place any more..... My old one, I finally got the valve shut and then I just used the kick starter from then on........... Good Luck Brother.........

Hi Jack. It's nice to have a project. I picked up a 550 Honda a few months ago that runs, and am cleaning it up and replacing the ugly parts now. Then I stumbled on a 450 Honda that needs a bit of TLC. I hope to have the 550 on the road by spring, and the 450 by fall.

We would have gone riding today (highs in the 40's), but we're cleaning house. Viet Nam Vets are coming by Monday, so we'll have some pleasant surprises for them, then it's a matter of toting the rest to the curb.

We had so much fun at TNIceMan's place, we plan to head that way in the next couple of months! I have barn picked out that'll make a nice shop.

Hope to see you again soon!

The bike is an 1981 XS-650. And we got it going just fine. I took the carbs apart and cleaned them. I don't know what you call them but the 1 inch brass tubes with the needle valve on them that slides down into the cylinder into the space you can see in the venturi were gummed up and would not work. The left float was also stuck. I kept taking it apart and cleaning it until it was spotless and everything moved like it was suppose to. I did not expect those big 1 inch X 4 inch springs in the top of the carbs to have quite as much pressure on them :) as I took off 8 small bolts that hold the covers on the last one the tops come flying off :) I guess you learn this stuff....We at least had fun getting it going.

I took the valve covers off and both valves were working fine. the spark plug was dripping with oil and fuel from not firing. I cleaned up the plugs and swapped them cylinder to cylinder and then put it all back to gether and it ran just fine.

I do not know alot about engines, but I am not afraid to tear something down and have a look. I have rebuilt a couple of little carbs on different stuff but never tackled a big carb such as a Holly. And engines are another story. I can adjust the valves do the spark plugs and all the fluids but I have never torn down an engine to the internal guts. I would like to do it some day but don't know anything about shimming the crank or using that liquid feeler guage stuff they use. I have watch when I was in my twenties the mechanic pull cylinders off of the little aircraft but you can pull one cylinder at a time. I watch him lap the valves and put in new rings and stuff. I just did the other parts of the inspection since he could sign it all off.

Don't know when the learning curve stops but so far it seems that I still have a couple brains cells left.... :)
