Got a buddy at work who is looking for a newer bike. He looked at a 2000 HD Ultra Classic this weekend. The bike has 133,000 miles on it and the dealer is asking $15,000 and some change. My experience with HD has been with the older bikes that you rebuilt a few times by 133,000 miles. I know nothing about the newer stuff. So, :?: At 133,000 miles should he shy away from this? Also, there was a guage on the bike that said AIR. The sales person nor the mechanic new what the guage was for. I figure it has to do with the air pressure in the shocks. Is this a correct assumption?

My suggestion would be to keep lookin. Buy a cycle trader and see what's available for that kind of money. If that bike hasn't had a major rebuild, it's gona need one and soon. Very few Harley can go that many miles on the original motor. I had Harleys for 12 yrs including 2 dressers. $15K for a bike with 133k miles is a little high, okay way high, in my opinion. He should be able to find something with less than half that many miles. Don't get sucked into something that is bound to cost a bundle in upkeep. Also if you deal with a private owner, you get a better feel for how the bike was cared for.

The gauge that says air is actually the air temperature which has never been very accurate because it is located in the fairing.
133,000 is alot of miles, but if it was well taken care of it would be worth about $8500.00 if I was looking at it.
2000 year models had the MM fuel injection where as the 02 and up have the Delphi injection which is far superior to the older version.

I found a bunch for sale there. I guess it depends on how many bucks he's willing to give up! http://www.cycletrader.com/adsearch/cyclesearchprocess.html

Is he locked into HD? If price is high up on his priority list, I'd at least show him a Yamaha Road Star, and maybe a few others. The Yam has air-cooling, belt drive, and are put together quite well... Have him take the badges off and tell his friends that it came from a "custom shop out 'east' ".... :D Just a thought.
Otherwise, I'd keep looking in the Trader. There are not many Cars that I would pay that kind of money for with that many miles.
Good Luck...

He is looking at HD only because he wants a full dresser tour bike like his courrent 1200 Wing and he does not like the 1500 or 1800 Wings. I'm trying to get him looking at either a used Valk or a BMW or something else.
