I rode over to the DOT about 21 miles away to pick up my very overI rode over to the DOT about 21 miles away to pick up my very overpriced license plate tag, and decided to blow out a few cobwebs as I hit the highway. I think the fact that a Harley Davidson passed me as I sat at the stop sign waiting to get on the highway, and that the rider refused to wave back, may have had a bearing on my decision to speed shift through the gears. Now, I don't care what anyone rides, but just don't give me attitude. :P Anyway, before long, the rider was a speck on my rear view mirror. He saw me coming, was full throttle when I passed him. My eyes were watering and I felt like I was getting a face lift as the skin on my face peeled back. I had left the helmet in the garage. 70 degrees here and sunny. I checked the GPS when I got to the DOT facility. Top speed only 170 mph. :a13: I turned off the GPS in case anyone got nosey while I was there. Going to tune her up and change the oil tonight. Got to get that faring back on after lowering the headlight and moving it forward a little too. The bugs really hurt. I am going back out to ride some more. Don, (VMan) she seems to like warm weather, about 70 degrees. Now the big question, do I erase the top speed, or leave it. Can it be used against me in a court of law? I am getting tired of the gunfighter syndrome -- everyone thinks I want to race them. I thought if I showed them the GPS, they might cut me some slack. I am headed out for ride #3 for teh day.

Cold/dry air is the best condition for most power but I guess 70 degrees for you guys is COLD/DRY air  Maybe by May we'll see some 70 degree days ... can hope anyways!

True story about GPS - ERASE the top speed! A buddy of mine was stopped last year on Blue Ridge Parkway (I believe) and PO was going to give him a ticket for speeding. My buddy told him that he just sped up to pass some cars/trucks throwing sand etc. The cop asked to "see" his GPS screen and when he saw the top speed was low he let him go with warning only! TRUE STORY ... I would reset.

I will get a photo, and erase the GPS tonight. Just got back in from ride number two for the day. It got a little cooler, and it was just as much fun, but I did not try to top the earlier run. It sure was fun to ride in long sleeves and no heavy leather duster. I think I had better get that faring back on, because the bugs seem to be enjoying the weather too. I think you can now understand why I don't want a Boss Hoss. Anybody tried for top end on one yet????

Have no idea if this will work, but I tried. The photo of the Garmin readout is at:

Assuming your electronics are correct I'm very impressed. Fastest I've ever been was a long time ago on a Stage 2 tuned Laverda Jota. 163 mph indicated on the M40 west of London on a beautiful warm, dry, early summers morning.

A 4 lane motorway with no-one else around. That was so fast my eyes watered even with a full face helmet, race fairing, rear sets and clip ons.

I asked Warren about top end and he suggested the Boss was more of a now to 100 machine :D He mentioned they tend to float a little over 100 :o We played tag with a Ferrari on the way to Daytona this year. I couldn't look at the speedo because we were sorking the traffic but Puff looked over my shoulder and said 135. That's 128 in real time since there's a 7mph disagreement between Mr Garmin and Mr Honda. Now I wouldn't want to make the kinds of moves we were making on a bike that loses it's manners in triple digits. So I'm glad to hear about your exploits and I agree with not wearing a helmet  At that speed  ...come visit!

I have to agree with you. Its a real shame that some people get on a scooter and immediately get a case of attitude.

GPS can sometimes be deceiving. I'm not saying that your GPS didn't say 170mph top speed but I have to think back to Dragbars highly modified supercharge Valk that ran 153.956 for a land speed record. If your bike will run 170mph then you need to take it to the salt flats and get you a land speed record. I'm sure you were going real fast but I don't think you were doing 170 mph Bro.

Maybe Dragbars will tell you what it took just to do what they did.

Since I knew what Dragbars went through on the salt flats, and how much :money1: project Bonneville cost, it amazed me when I saw the reading on the GPS. The speedometer only goes to 145, and it is not very accurate either. But you won't see me headed the the salt flats on my salary. I'm just trying to scrape up enough to get to Maggie Valley. I hear all my friends will be there -- and most of 'em on V-8's. And I hear the big Boss Hosses attract the ladies in my age categogy. At least Lamont's did. I just got to go there again. :D

Actually they do sometimes ... there is a glitch in ALL of the StreetPilot series (I've had the ColorMap, StreetPilot 3 and StreetPilot 2610) I've ever owned. I haven't figured out how to "duplicate" the problem. I have had readings ranging from 34? MPH to over 400 MPH ... as much as I may wish I owned something that fast ... I DON'T! It seems the false readings I have seen personaly appear after LONG sessions with a shutdown in between. Next error I get showing numbers like this I will document with picture ...

Here is an article that explains very basic theory of HP > Speed - plenty of info available out there.
