I figure there are not too many of you that will remember this day. I'll never forget it as my Aunt, mom's sister, was talking to her husband on the phone from Hawaii when the bombing started. We were all in the kitchen when he called, then all we heard was some boom boom boom and he said the Islands were under Japanese attack. My aunt hung up and we were on pins and needles till he called from the states again in January. NO mail, nothing was coming thru from Hawaii to the states, except for a bunch of military personnel going the other way to the war.
He was a Capt in the Army Air Corp, and had landed at Hawaii for a fuel stop and a good night's rest.
His plane never made it off the ground again. He happened to be downtown someplace away from the bombings. He caught a ride with a Naval officer who took him out to Schofield Barracks to do what ever he could to help out. He took a small piece of shrapnel and was awarded the Purple Heart.
The old geezer is still alive and almost totally blind from cataract surgeries. He sure had some stories when he made it back to the states in January 1942. He was and had been stationed in Clovis, New Mexico doing pilot training....... I don't remember now why he was out with a plane and in Hawaii at the time. Maybe he was logging hours. That was a requirement to keep flying and to train new pilots....
Let's give them all one great big, snappy salute, who served in WW II.
